They intended to develop a stone quarry, but found the stone to flaky to be used as building material. Turning to lumbering, they sold the wood to steamers traveling the Great Lakes. In 1868 W.E. Rogers, an officer in the US Army, organized a surveying party to Presque Isle, with Albert Molitor as supervisor.

The boundaries of Presque Isle County were established in 1840, but the county government was not put into place until 1871. The name, which is French, means "almost an island" and was given because of the narrow peninsula which juts several miles into Lake Huron. There are 72 miles of Lake Huron shore line in the county.
